Hangover – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment : If you have ever overindulged in alcohol the night before something important, you probably woke up the next morning hungover and desperate to sober up. Because hangovers can be painful and interfere with our daily lives, there are many myths circulating about quick ways to get rid of the headache or nausea that you feel after a very long night of fun. However, some of these myths can actually leave you sicker than before.
First, let’s look at how alcohol works on our nervous system. Your body releases certain chemicals during drinking that put your body in a state of stress. One of these chemicals, acetate, relaxes the smooth muscles in your body and helps you keep breathing in check to ensure you don’t lose consciousness. If you over-dose of acetate, you can have a cardiac arrest, hangover or an arrhythmia, which can be lethal. If you are sick or have a heart attack, your treatment will be similar to this; you’ll need to relax completely and rest. If you try to lift even a finger while you are sick, you can cause a searing pain that won’t stop unless you get medication.
If you are drinking alcohol that is too much, you can experience the After effects. These can include shaking, shivering, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, hot flashes, headaches and dry mouth. Loss of control of the bladder and bowel can cause you to pass out and make you gag until you get the fix. Some people experience stomach flu-like symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fever.
One of the best treatments for hangovers is to drink lots of fluids, preferably electrolyte replacing parts, water and sports drinks. Vegetables and fruits that are rich in potassium can help, too. Your body will strive to get back to homeostasis by utilizing vitamins and mineral supplements, too. Certain prescribed medications for high blood pressure have shown to help alleviate the symptoms, which can be brought on by a few more drinks. Overdoing the alcohol intake can lead to more complications.
When your body isn’t getting enough water, you may wake up with dry mouth or you may have trouble drinking. A quick way to get hydrated is to sip water while on the toilet or before going to bed. The body wants to rehydrate as soon as it can after soaking in a bath. The recommended amount of water to drink or consume is 6-8 glasses a day, specially during the summer or during hot weather. During workouts, more water should be consumed. If you are on medications, they may cause a lack of fluid, so don’t forget to drink in between doses.
Hot drinks can also be an easy and healthy way to decrease the thirst mechanism and replenish the minerals in your body that you need. Hot drinks are basically rehydration drinks that contains electrolytes and sugars. If you have caffeinated tea, coffee or soda, they will not be beneficial and may even dehydrate you more. You don’t need them during this time, so load up with water and sugar instead. If you can, drink a fruit juice during the day too to replace the fluids and electrolytes contained in the fruit.
Wine won’t specifically dehydrate you, but you may not be able to enjoy the effect of a glass of wine on your hunger. Individuals who are dehydrated already may not be able to properly digest the moisture in say, a glass of red wine. Regardless, water and non-alcoholic carbonated beverages still have benefits that can be taken with you to enjoy while avoiding the symptoms of dehydration.
Staying hydrated should be the first thing to stress when you plan on enjoying your summer vacation. Much of what you purchase is bottled, and while this is better than tap water, you still need to be careful.$10-$15 is a lot of money, and often not enough to make sure you have enough replenishing water for the week.
